Sharing a printer with CUPS

24 / 03 / 2008 · 1 comment ·

This guide, head directly to me with ubuntu, seeks to share a network printer connected to your computer called A (with linux, ubuntu in my case) to a computer B (both Win and Linux) via the CUPS service for those who do not needs Samba is lighter and less resource-hungry.

First for those who have not, installed on your computer to CUPS:
sudo apt-get install cupsys cupsys-client

Now from a browser, type http://localhost:631 and head into administration.
The new screen

select items:
Share published printers connected to this system and Allow Remote Administration
Save Now all press Edit settings and restart the service with the terminal command / etc / init.d / cupsys restart

Computer B -> If linux
This case is really a simply absurd. In my case, with Ubuntu just go into System / Administration / Printing. From the Settings screen of the server check that all options are selected as in figure

Now just click on New Printer and select the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) and write host localhost: 631 and select Find Queue ..
If the CUPS configuration is successful you should find the printer in the list you shared.

Computer B -> If Windows

With Windows it is complicated a bit ':

Go into the Control Panel under Add Printer and select Network Printer and select the item Connect to a printer on the Internet ...
In the url you must now enter the ip to static ip (if you see a router to assign a static IP to your PC) is usually of the form http / / 192,168 .. 1 followed by the back door cups, the 631, and the name of printer.
(If you have no idea what it's called the screen cups head under Printers, there's the name)
In summary, you should now have an address like this: http://192.168.1.1:631/printers/nome
Now press forward to the next screen select the printer Apple Color LW 12/660 PS (we will use a generic printer with Postscript). Press forward and change the name to the printer as you prefer. Ok, the configuration is finished!
Problems that could happen
personally I have had two problems with my first time:
1) computer B does not find the printer on the network. You probably need to open port 631 inside the firewall.
2) after the first working configuration, restart the PC, does not print any more. Probably the problem comes because you have not set a static IP to the computer

I'm available for suggestions and / or other indications
