"Back in Time" is the name of a handy application for backing up your files, working on both GNOME and KDE.
It is based on three tools already known and well established: rsync to create backup images and restore; diff to see if any files changed since the last backup, cp the hardlink.
I consider this application very useful, both for its ease of use, and the ability to create a backup of your files without multiply every time the files have remained unchanged, obviously to save space.
Configuration is very simple: you just choose the location where you will create backup images, folders for which you want to backup and when to start the procedure (either manually or according to a preset time).
The installation for Ubuntu can be done by either downloading the package backintime-common and then the package for your graphical environment (GNOME or KDE4) or by entering the repository for Hardy or Intrepid.
There are also the repository for Fedora and of course the source to be completed.
Note for those using GNOME you can integrate the application within the actions of Nautilus as reported here
And you, what do you think of this program?
