Do I have to say a few words and make known what I think is at present the best set of icons for GNOME in circulation:

GNOME-colors is now in version 2.6, bringing many improvements to the graphical icons, bugfixes and add support to the new notification system present in Jaunty Jackalope, notify-osd.
By downloading the package, found on gnome-look, you'll have 4 sets of icons:
- Human: a set of icons inspired by the classic Human present in Ubuntu, as predominantly orange.
- Wise: a set of icons as predominantly green
- Brave: set of icons as predominantly blue and that fits very well with Clearlooks
- Wine: set in which the predominant color is red
Unpack the file. Zip download, choose the color that best suits you, open Appearance (found in System-Preferences) and installed the icons by dragging the selected folder inside. You'll see a prompt, agreed.
Within the package there is also an Extras folder to customize Firefox, Thunderbird, Inkscape, Exaile, etc. ... you just choose the folder with your favorite color and copy in your usr filesystem and consent when it asks you to merge folders .
If you want to try some more themes and / or GDM this is the project page.
